Maintenance Costs

Post by joefremont » Sat Jun 25, 2016 6:33 pm

We have talked about this before but think now we are getting to the point where we can implement it.

Here is the idea, right now maintenance costs are a function of the price of the aircraft, a basic D-Check is 3% the cost of the plane. This makes it more expensive to maintain new aircraft, whose price is based on the price they are currently being sold at, vs older aircraft where the price is much lower market price, usually because the real maintenance costs are too high compared to new aircraft. At the minimum older versions of the same aircraft should cost about the same as newer versions, but if you look at the 737, the -700 costs 8 times as much as the -200 to buy and maintain where they should be at least the same.

So to fix that I am proposing we use a formula based on the dry weight of the aircraft. to that we add 10% for each jet or turboprop engine, or 20% for each piston or helicopter engine. We also add 1/2 % for each year since the aircraft was introduced. We then multiply that number by 750 to get the 'maintenance value' of the aircraft, which will them be used to calculate the cost of each maintenance level as it does today. I ran the numbers on this formula and on average the cost will be about 87% of what it is in the current system. Here are some examples of the costs between the two methods.

Boeing 737-700 before 1,890,000 after 1,092,733 (58%)
Boeing 737-200 before 244,200 after 878,850 (360%)
* Note the -700 is about 37% heavier than the -200

Boeing 747-100 before 1,548,000 after 6,321,564 (408%)
Boeing 747-400 before 3,600,000 after 6,173,785 (171%)
Boeing 747-8i before 11,034,000 after 6,853,275 (62%)

And some very old prop-liners
Douglas DC-3 before 37,500 after 296,582 (791%)
Douglas DC-6B before 126,600 after 1,341,467 (1060%)

Comments? Questions?

Since there are no comments, I assume everyone likes this idea and thinks I should make it happen.

Since there are no objections, consider it done.
