Allowances for the 250kt rule
Moderator: FSAirlines Staff
An important point that has been raised in this thread is that the 250 kt speed limit is not cast in stone. There are exceptions, and there are many of us who fly on VATSIM. There have been occasions when ATC asks me to fly faster than 250 kts below 10,000, or when my request for such has been granted.
If you want to fly Vatsim and FlyNET together then you could request of ATC to keep your speed withing the FlyNET rules. Maybe a post on the Vatsim forums to get some guidelines so that Vatsim controllers are aware of the FlyNET limitations. You could always say you are experiencing turbulance and need to reduce speed below 250kts and errmmm don't ask them if you can keep your speed up.

No post on the VATSIM forum is needed John. Any pilot can refuse to do something that ATC asks if he or she doesn't feel comfortable with it, real world or simulated. If he doesn't want to get dinged for the 250kt rule, then when ATC asks for more than 250kt under 10,000 feet, he just says "unable".
Real world ATC isn't allowed to require more than 250 knots under 10,000 feet anyway. They can only ask.

I wish to add a post in support of DGor's request.
Today I was flying below 10,000 feet at 220kts, when sudden turbulence suddenly caused my speed to jump from 220 kts to 261 kts - and the client penalises me straight away for speeding under 10,000 ft. This has happened on a few occasions. How unfair this is!!!
Can you not get the client to recognise that sudden jumps in speed are due to turbulence and therefore not penalise the pilot, or perhaps give a grace time to allow the speed to drop back down again? Or perhaps even provide a "disable speed penatly" option?
Many thanks.
