FSA: Getting Started Video

Post by joefremont » Sat Oct 26, 2019 5:12 pm

Sam Scott from Fly Vegas has very graciously created a series of how-to videos for FSA, if your just starting with us you may want to view some of them to see how its done.

The information provided is accurate at the time of production of the video. As FSAirlines evolves, some information may become outdated. The goal of these video's is to help our newest members get up and flying and using the system with as little difficulty as possible. If you detect any outdated information, please let Sam know via the youtube comment section. Thank You & Happy Flying!

Great job, Sam. Undoubtedly, those videos will be an important help for pilots starting (and also veterans) in FSA system.
Thank you very much.

My Pleasure!

Once I got my feet wet doing the first one, I learned a bit more about the video creator program each time.

If you do a search for "FSAirlines" in youtube you will find other airlines have done the same many years ago but kept them in house for their own pilots I guess...... I thought I was doing something "new" for FSAirlines. Not even close! LOL

Well it's new in that you did it for everyone and did so openly, rather than hiding it for your own group. It was very generous for you to do that and I am very thankful.

Flying in all aspects is rather a small knit community. For people to be selfish and hold things "for their own group" goes against everything the flying community stands for (in my opinion).

In Flight Simulation, the same holds true and it is what separates the "video gamers" from the true flight enthusiasts. Video gamers are looking for any way to push the envelope to attain the highest score and be the "top dog" for bragging rights and to satisfy their own ego. Pilots on the other hand, real world & simulation, are looking to polish their own flying skills daily and become the best pilot they can in the great battle of human verses Mother Nature & Machine. There are so many things outside of actual flying in the real commercial aviation business to deal with, especially when flying the general public, there is no time for selfishness or keeping secrets from one another. Those who do are weeded out fairly quickly.

While it's true each airline may have it's own business secrets, I feel no need to hide how the FSAirlines system works from new members just to keep a competitive advantage over them. It's childish and selfish.

So this is why I am not afraid to share information on how to use the FSAirlines system. And for all those new pilots wanting to learn to fly and try their hand at running their own Virutal Airline, I say with a big happy smile:

Welcome Aboard!
:)

Question: Should I do another video on the "divert" tab in the client? So pilots can better understand if they are running low on fuel or their destination is below weather minimums, they have the option to divert in FSAirlines?

Sure if you like, it could be useful. If you do be sure to mention that if the route has 'technical stops' or if your aircraft has packages on board whose destination is that airport they can land there without having to press the 'divert' button.

Which reminds me, I was looking at the values entered into the 'technical stop' field and see I need to add some validation to it as it should just be airport codes.

??? You will have to explain that one to me, that is something I am unfamiliar with.

I know the divert tab allows pilots to stop any place that can take their aircraft (usually for fuel when running low). I know nothing about what you speak regarding 'technical stops'.

Ah, so its good I brought it up. On the route there is a field called "Technical stops", the idea is you put into this field either a space or comma separated list of airport codes. If when flying that route you land at one of those stops, the client treats it as if you had pressed the divert button. Useful for say that flight from EINN/Shannon to KJFK, back in the day if the winds were too strong they would make a stop at Gander so you could enter CYQX into the 'Technical Stop' field and when you realize the winds are too strong you just land, no penalty since you already published that such a stop was possible.

Oh yeah, we need a video on this for sure. I have no idea how long that new box has been in the route maker. LOL
If I did, I had no idea what it was for.

Thanks!

I'll try to get it done tomorrow afternoon.

This sure changes the dynamic as we have been doing 1 stop flights by making separate routes for each leg to deliver packages.

I am getting ready to make a video on using Divert & Technical Stops features but this comment has me stymied. I need some clarification. The way it reads is that anytime we have packages on board for a location other than our flight destination we can just stop there without using divert or technical stop features? I would think that would trigger a "wrong airport landing" penalty big time.

Ok, here is an example.
You booked KSFO->KLGA
You load up packages for KLGA and KORD, if you were to land at KORD without pushing divert, no penalty, but anywhere else except KLGA, penalty.

I assumed that someone was going to book a flight and load up packages for some place in between, and then intentionally land at that in between place and forget to push the button, to make it easier I added the auto divert to those places.
