Landing lights

Post by Stan » Sat Mar 08, 2008 4:39 pm

Some time ago Konny altered the point at which the landing light penalty applied from 10,000 to 11,000ft to give us a bit of leaway.I was just approaching Gatwick and put my L/Lights on at 10,400ft and i got dinged. So,does this mean that the bit of leaway we were given no longer applies.

Hi Stan,

I don't ever remember any leeway being given for this penalty. I'm pretty sure that this would have had to be implemented in the client and that hasn't been updated for a while now. You either dreamt it or I was asleep when/if it was announced.

I agree with Stan in believing there is leeway built in to the system...

What I would look at is your altimeter setting. Did you have it set to the correct setting?

I know there is some leeway for operating at high altitude airports which gives you an extra margin above 10,000' amsl, but I think that's tied to altitude above ground level (2000' rings a bell, but don't quote me). I'm not sure if it applies all of the time.

I flew into and out of Quito this week and I switched the lights at 10,500' without penalty, but the airport is at 9,400'.

The margin is "smart". On climb, you get +1000 feet (until 11000 feet MSL) to turn the landing lights off. On descent, you get until 1000 feet AGL to turn the lights back on. As long as you turn the landing lights on between 1000 feet AGL and 10000 feet MSL, you won't get penalized.

OK, I must have been dreaming that it had been altered, but i cant find the the post where it said it had been altered,i think it was just one line under a couple of other alterations which several poeple commented on but nobody mentioned the bit about the altitude being altered.I Must be going senile.
