When you become partners if your airline has a low rating ,you will get more passengers on your flights when flying codesharing routes, which of course will bring in more virtual dollars.
The main airline gets nothing other than the satisfaction of knowing they are helping another airline to get virtually richer.

as stan said if your airline has a low rating and your not getting 100% full flights, it allows you to get more passengers on the codeshared routes only. It also allows you to charge more for each ticket without loosing passengers.

but its main purpose is to just let airlines share routes with one another.
