Fly By Wire A32NG Fuel Consumption

Post by fackprod » Sun Dec 12, 2021 1:47 pm

Just wondering if anyone else is experiencing excessive fuel consumption in the FBW A32NG in Zmsfs.

I have been flying this aircraft for the last 10 months. Recently i am finding I am running out of fuel on any flight even where a flight is well within aircraft range.

According to the FSA Flight Briefing Doc, I should aim to use 14500lbs (roughly) between YPPH & YPAD. I have tried to complete this flight 3 times now unsuccessfully. The last time I simply added fuel to MTOW. That gave me 29500lbs (roughly), double the FSA recommendation.

I ran out of fuel with 480 nms still to go.

This FBW aircraft offers managed speed, altitude and navigation. I traditionally use these settings. However having failed to reach my destination in previous attempts, I manually reduced climb and cruise speed. Same outcome. Fuel exhausted half way across yhe Great Australian Bight.

I should be able to fly direct between Singapore and Perth. I had to load fuel to MTOW and to detour through Darwin.

So, something has changed for me at least. I accept that in the early days, fuel consumption was probably generous. Now however it is impossible to get anywhere close to flying a reasonable distance with a normal payload even excluding 7000lbs of pakages.

Anyone else finding this? And any suggestions how to tweak the consumption values to get back to a fair position.
Thanks

I personally don't have the FBW version, but looking at the config for the default A320, look for the engines.cfg file in the aircraft and see if there is a fuel_flow_scalar property in it, if so try adjusting the number to get more accurate fuel flow.

I have noticed many aircraft having unrealistic fuel flow, when I see it, its usually because its triggered the too little fuel control. For the default 78X it was impossible to find the fuel_flow_scalar but in the default a320 and 748 it was.

Hi Alastair
I have been flying the FBW A320 in msfs and not seen this problem. A recent flight from YPPH to YMML used 6872Kg (15118 lbs) and other flights used slightly less than expected by FSA.
I am using the development version of the aircraft, not sure if that makes a difference.

Just flown the YPPH-YPAD route and block fuel was 5203kg. Are you sure your throttles are correctly calibrated. When they are set to the CR detent check that the PFD does not show a LVR CLB warning (either steady or flashing). Also check fuel flow when at cruise. On my last flight it was 800-820 KG/H when at FL390 and MACH .781. Again, I am using the latest development version.

Hope you get it resolved.

Thanks Mike.

I now realise fuel purchased through FSA Client no longer automatically adds to aircraft. I attempted another flight this time monitoring fuel loaded into FBW from Simbrief plan. Only 7400 odd lbs loaded. Edited Simbrief plan adding reserves for good measure. Recommended 21000
some odd lbs.

FBW now has 12.2 tonnes or over 24000 lbs and way more than I need. Purchased 20000 lbs thru FSA client. Well into flight YPPH - YPAD with heaps of fuel for trip.

I do not recall fuel within fbw being a critical factor previously. Must have missed something. Just glad to get flying again.

Just came across a FB post that confirms changes to FBW fuel loading.

We have recently improved the A32NX flight model and finalized our weight and balance loading integration available on the development version. Please note:
- We have disabled the MSFS fuel and weights UI to prevent issues.
- Use the EFB for fueling and the AOC W/B Page on the MCDU for payload.… See more

On my last 10 flights i used 60,061 pounds of fuel for 14 hours and 54 min of flight time. Average flight length only 89 min. This is 4030 pound per hour average including take off and landing. These were all not max weight because I did not need the range. Depending on what site you read the real plane uses approx 4400-4600 pounds per hour. So I'm a little under the average consumption. I use the latest development version and update daily. Attached is a pic from airbus about fuel consumption. I'd say look at your log book and see if your fuel burn is reasonable. I always fly between FL350 or 390. Never higher. On less then an hour i fly fly 350 or fl360. I normally use default fmc speed.

Also, fuel musty be added through flypad on left. not the MSFS screen. Add fuel first, then start fsairlines.
